BoTox is now a must amongst Sydney’s stylish crowd and now it has become an integral part of a beauty routine for people in the Harbour City.
Still I am often amazed when I listen to the ludicrous stories about the procedure. I have included below a selection of the more popular myths that I encounter in my work as a physician at Star Cosmetic Medicine in Pyrmont, Sydney.
Misunderstanding Number 1: My facial muscles may freeze!

The human face has sixty or so muscles. The facial muscles normally work harmoniously, however from continual movement lines may appear. Too great a dose of BoTox can lead to the muscles of the forehead appearing too relaxed. By and large physicians use relatively low doses to are designed to make you look ‘refreshed’, yet you will always maintain your facial expression.
Thus by employing small quantities of the toxin in exactly the right tissues an expressive face is kept whilst the wrinkles undergo a softening effect.
Misunderstanding Number 2: BoTox is poisonous!
This to some extent is right. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the correct scientific terminology. In very large doses it may relax facial muscles that you do not want relaxed and can even cause sickness.
Chemists have a well known saying that states ‘everything is a poison – it all depends on the dose’. Any medicine may make anyone ill in big enough dosages. If you drink too great a quantity of water it can kill you.
Misunderstanding Number 3: BoTox hurts!
The needles used at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter smaller than your hair. Quite a few people have stated that the injections are not as painful as a bug bite. Certainly not as painful as having a blood profile.
Misunderstanding Number 4: My face will not be as sensitive!
This is completely untrue. Botulinum medicine works primarily on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on the nerves of sensation. Only the ability to relax your muscles is affected by BoTox injections.
Misunderstanding Number 5. You can’t stop having BoTox or else the wrinkles become more noticable!
This is also untrue.
You can expect BoTox to last for in the region of three months. Later injections tend to last a little longer. The wrinkles will gradually reform as the muscle returns to normal. However they will certainly be no worse than before.
Even if you do not have BoTox again – any wrinkles should be smoother than if you had never been treated. This is mainly due to the fact your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
