Shooting From the Lip…It`s a Deadly Game

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 4:14 am

In Northern Canada there are two seasons, winter and July. When the back roads thaw in July they get muddy. Trucks traveling the back roads leave deep ruts that become frozen when winter returns. When you enter the backwoods you are greeted by a sign that says, “Drivers, please choose carefully which ruts you drive in, because you'll be in it for the next twenty miles.”

Mark Twain gives us the following advice. “The secret to good conversation is leaving out the wrong words.”

The same thing can be said about your own conversations. Choose your words carefully; you may have to live with the disastrous consequences for the next twenty years. I've seen many friendships, and business opportunities sabotaged because someone pulled the trigger before they assessed the consequences. Words, once spoken, can never be recalled.

So what I call quick-draw, “shooting from the lip” words or comments are opportunity killers. Although some try to fluff them off as just “misspeak” they are still irreversible disasters in the making. “Of course if your language tools are limited and your verbal options are in short supply, you are just shooting blanks. Your verbal options probably need expanding. Learning and crafting your message with new, powerful and influential words and phrases is a must in our “you don't get a second chance to make a first impression” world.

WHY DO SMART PEOPLE SAY STUPID THINGS?

It's all about habit.

Somewhere in our past we heard our habitual pop-off comments and thought they were clever. We adopted them into our speech patterns. But what you thought was clever may sound mean or smart-aleck to others. That favorite expression so carelessly thrown out could live on to haunt you for life.

SO WHAT'S THE SOLUTION? As Mark Twain said “The secret to good conversation is leaving out the wrong words.”

So the solution is simple, throw out the old and replace with a verbal upgrade. Acquire new alternative ways of expressing yourself. Make your conversations so powerful others want to be with you and give you your way. You'll be surprised what you can get when you ask for it the right way. Better words always make things better.

Mind Mapping

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 11:03 pm

Ever been on a project where you had trouble keeping all the ‘if’ questions straight? “If this happens,” you say, “we’ll do one thing. But, if that happens, we’ll do something else instead, but only on a Wednesday.”

In cases like these, especially with high stakes, you may have drawn a diagram on a piece of paper. That way you could visualize the forks in the path ahead, while still seeing the objective at the end.

Diagrams map our reasoning and can be as simple as a few lines on a napkin, or as complex as computer models. Called mind maps, these diagrams help us make better decisions, or make difficult decisions more easily.

But, let’s also think of them as a system for better communication. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes.

Mind mapping helps us communicate in at least three ways: to illustrate the components of complex situations; to show the outcomes of a series of actions; and to highlight otherwise unrecognized linkages.

Whenever I redesign my website, I’m dealing with a complex situation. So, I draw a simple diagram, with boxes representing pages and lines showing their connections. It’s only a modestly complex website, but keeping track of the hierarchy and connections can drive me crazy.

So, you can imagine how hard it is, not only to work with a more complex situation, but also explaining it to someone else. However, a simple visual outline of the components and their relationships can effectively communicate even the most Byzantine of structures.

You can also apply mind maps to track the outcomes of a series of actions. By way of an example, some manufacturers of consumer products wonder about selling directly to consumers on the Web. First they ask themselves whether or not they think such an initiative would be profitable. Second, if it will be profitable, how much will they have to spend, and how long will it take? And the list goes on.

By now, though, you’re getting the picture. One thing depends on another, and the answer to it depends on the answer to a previous question. Mind maps illustrate the actions and consequences, and give us a way to forecast possible outcomes.

Now, let’s turn to highlighting unrecognized linkages. One of my former newsletter clients is a major printing company, and part of our newsletter mandate involved explaining changes in the work world to employees. On some occasions we found it helpful to create diagrams of the forces behind the changes, and of our responses to them. We might show how technology relates to globalization, for example, without overwhelming our readers with words and abstract concepts.

In summary, mind mapping, or diagramming our reasoning, helps us communicate by simplifying complex situations, showing the possible consequences of a series of decisions, and highlighting linkages among seemingly unconnected events or players.

Playing the Stock Market

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 7:52 pm

At what age do you remember hearing about the Stock Market? It usually happens at the end of high school in one of your business or accounting classes. It is a truly a shock for most of us that we regular citizens can own a piece of huge multi-national corporations by simply buying their stock, you can really buy a couple of shares with just one hundred bucks. In College when we enroll in basic business and Finance classes the eyes of the students are widened by the millions and millions of dollars of profit that one regular, but very smart human being can make by playing the Wall Street game. Playing the stock market is a double sided sword it can go really well but then it cannot, which is why that you only invest money that you really don’t need and of course that you educate yourself on it. Before taking this big step, take some classes, learn about the market, the different indexes and maybe even about the different and profitable international markets. Take your time and really make rational well-informed decisions, it is really the only way that you maybe able to make money. Most stock market day to day citizen investors, really spend a lot of time and effort, they wake up, hit the gym to stay in shape with Acceletrim and right after their rest of the day is spent monitoring the financial markets and really all the news that develop in the world, since there is a definite impact. Take your time, do you research and be patient, after all Rome was not make in a single day.

Bryan Ellis comments on Virtual Real Estate Investing

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 12:07 am

Virtual Real Estate Investing” is a relatively new concept. What is meant by “Virtual Real Estate Investing” ranges from online games like SecondLife (where real profit can be made) to the use of internet technologies to make normal real estate investors more profitable.

To get the facts, I sought out the man generally considered to be the father of virtual real estate investing: Bryan Ellis.

“I began using the term ‘virtual real estate investing’ in the late 1990’s when I realized the clear similiarities in profit strategies, regardless of whether the “real estate” is “virtual” or “physical” said Ellis.

One example of the parallels between virtual and physical real estate Bryan Ellis cites is the similarity between the monetization of domain names versus physical property. He points out that control of a domain name or even a specific web page is much like controlling a real estate property ” those assets can be monetized in similar ways: By selling them for a profit, by leasing them, by offering advertising, etc.

I must admit: Its easy to see the parallels. Consider this: If you own a piece of real estate in a desirable neighborhood, your real estate has value because other people are interested in that location. Likewise, if you own a desirable domain name, others will find value in it because it serves their purposes. So it doesn’t matter if you own physical real estate or virtual real estate – you’ll likely use similar strategies to turn them into money in your pocket.

In our next installment of this series on virtual real estate investing., Bryan Ellis will share the internet analogies to the physical concept of real estate development.

The Dick Van Dyke Show (Season 5) DVD Review

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 5:15 pm

In the Fall of 1961, CBS first aired The Dick Van Dyke Show, one of funniest sitcoms in television history. Similar to I Love Lucy, but featuring more docile and less eccentric characters, the show became a mainstay in the top 10 Nielsen ratings for its first four seasons. When the show’s ratings slipped in the fifth season, the network cancelled the show. But in the four decades since, The Dick Van Dyke Show has continued to entertain its fans and their children (and their children’s children) via syndicated re-runs…

The Dick Van Dyke Show is centered around the life of Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke), a family man living in suburban New York. As the head writer for the fictional “Alan Brady Show,” he works with co-writers Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally Rogers (Rose Marie). Rob’s work life is always interesting given Buddy’s constant wisecracks, Sally’s never-ending search for a husband, and the trio’s unified harassment of Alan Brady’s brother-in-law, Mel Cooley (Richard Deacon). At home, Rob’s loving yet overly-nervous wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) stays at home with the couple’s son Ritchie (Larry Mathews). Surrounded by all these unique characters, Rob is always embroiled in someone’s scheme, fantasy, or shenanigan…

The Dick Van Dyke Show (Season 5) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “Coast-to-Coast Big Mouth” in which trouble ensues when a nationally syndicated talk show host manages to trick Laura into revealing that Alan Brady is really bald… Other notable episodes from Season 5 include “Viva Petria” in which the Petries’ maid recommends that her Spanish immigrant friend enlist Rob’s help in finding a job, and “The Bottom of Mel Cooley’s Heart” in which Alan Brady fires Mel for failing to reveal a change in the show’s script…

Poker Player Profiles: Todd Brunson

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 10:19 am

It’s probably not easy being the son of the most legendary pokern players in all of history. Surely when Todd got started, he’d sit at the table and start getting ribbed from those in the know, hearing how he’d never be anything like his father, how who does he think he is, etc.

Though like Ken Griffey Jr., there might be some who’d say Todd Brunson has not only made his own name for himself, but that he is just as hardcore a poker player as his father. Playing in all the big cash games and invitational poker TV, Todd has gone deep in Poker Superstars and the NBC National Heads Up Championship, as well as turning a nice profit on High Stakes Poker. He’s also got an amazing ponytail, if you’re interested.

Todd is a model for the quiet player, sitting back and making his moves not based on what the louder players at the table want his attention on, but how the texture of the table feels. Todd is perhaps more an odds and texture based player than some of the more read-based players, but if there is anything to be learned from Todd it is the ways of exploiting a tight aggressive image at the right time, and always keeping tabs on your money. Todd is the kind of player that works for his money, that is not there to gamble. If you want to make a living at poker, you could do worse than following Todd Brunson’s model to the T.

Cisco CCNP / BCMSN Exam Tutorial: Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP)

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 8:06 am

When you’re studying to pass the BCMSN exam on the way to earning your CCNP certification, you’re going to add to your CCNA knowledgebase every step of the way. Nowhere is that more than configuring a trunk between two switches.

You know that IEEE 802.1Q (“dot1q”) and ISL are your two choices of trunking protocols, and you know the main differences between the two. What you might not have known is that there’s a third trunking protocol that’s running between your Cisco switches, and while it’s a transparent process to many, you had better know about it for your BCMSN and other CCNP exams!

The Cisco-proprietary Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP) actively attempts to negotiate a trunk link with the remote switch. This sounds great, but there is a cost in overhead – DTP frames are transmitted every 30 seconds. If you decide to configure a port as a non-negotiable trunk port, there’s no need for the port to send DTP frames.

DTP can be turned off at the interface level with the switchport nonegotiate command, but as you see below, you cannot turn DTP off until the port is no longer in dynamic desirable trunking mode. (Dynamic desirable is the default mode for most Cisco switch ports.)

SW2(config)#int fast 0/8

SW2(config-if)#switchport nonegotiate

Command rejected: Conflict between ‘nonegotiate’ and ‘dynamic’ status.

SW2(config-if)#switchport mode ?

access Set trunking mode to ACCESS unconditionally

dynamic Set trunking mode to dynamically negotiate access or trunk mode

trunk Set trunking mode to TRUNK unconditionally

SW2(config-if)#switchport mode trunk

SW2(config-if)#switchport nonegotiate

When you’re working with Cisco switches in a home lab or rack rental environment, run IOS Help regularly to see what options are available for the commands you’re practicing with. Cisco switch ports have quite a few options, and the best way to find them is with one simple symbol – the question mark!
